Dubai Student Visa Process, Required Documents & Eligibility

Nearly every international student in Dubai studies on a university-sponsored residence visa. Here's how the process actually works, from admission offer to Emirates ID.

Who Can Apply

Students accepted into a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate program at a UAE-accredited university are eligible. Part-time students are generally not eligible for university sponsorship and instead need an existing visa — for example, one sponsored by a parent already resident in the UAE.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Secure an unconditional offer letter from an accredited university — a conditional offer will not trigger the visa process.
2. Choose your sponsorship route — university sponsorship (most common) or sponsorship via a UAE-resident parent or relative.
3. Submit required documents to the university's visa office, including passport copies, passport-style photos, academic transcripts, and proof of tuition/visa fee payment.
4. Entry permit issued by the university on your behalf through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).
5. Travel to the UAE within the entry permit's validity window.
6. Medical fitness test at an approved government health centre.
7. Biometrics appointment for your Emirates ID, usually scheduled 7–10 working days after the medical test clears.
8. Residence visa stamped in your passport and Emirates ID issued, completing the process.

Timeline & Cost

Processing typically takes 3–5 weeks depending on whether normal or express track is chosen — normal-track entry permits usually take about 14 working days, while express can be 7–10 working days. All-in visa costs (entry permit, medical test, Emirates ID, insurance and administrative fees) generally fall between roughly AED 5,500 and AED 8,500, though this varies by university and emirate, and it's worth asking whether a one-time visa maintenance/deposit charge applies separately.

Renewal & Work Rights

The student visa is valid for one year and must be renewed annually for the duration of the program, with universities typically recommending renewal begin at least 45 days before expiry. Many students are permitted to work part-time (commonly up to 15 hours per week during term) with the appropriate work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
